What a good sign! But we’d still expect the usual launch-day crowding issues.īut this story mode! Hey, let’s talk about this for a minute. However, we were able to test the game’s multiplayer connections with single and circuit racing and had no hiccups. The top four players in an eight-person race move up the ladder, with a final round determining the overall winner. We didn’t get to test GP before launch – it really does require that many players – but it’s billed as the game’s main draw and is clearly trying to capitalize on the battle royale trend. Upgrading to the full version gives you a wider variety of options, a story campaign, and more characters. At release, there will be a “Lite” version that can join local multiplayer and participate in 64-player GP mode. The structure of Chocobo GP is a bit odd, which leads us to believe it may have switched back and forth between a paid release and a free-to-play title in development. (This can and should be fixed in a patch. It is strange! And something you might expect from a multiplatform port designed for a different gamepad layout. ![]() Chocobo GP offers three configurations in the options menu, but they all map acceleration to the Switch’s tiny shoulder bumpers, and none of them let you really take advantage of the much larger and more comfortable triggers instead. The main element holding it back? control options. And it feels like it could benefit from locations that reference the classic a bit more directly final fantasy.ĭriving feels a little floating at times, but it’s bearable enough. How’s the driving? And how are the tracks? The answer is… good? Chocobo GP recycles environments to provide a few variations of tracks, a judicious use of development resources that inevitably makes things feel a bit the same. Even on a lower difficulty, the severity of the attacks and the subsequent recovery time often only allow you to lead the entire race in 7th place. And the well-known Mario Kart phenomenon of a near-endless barrage of items hitting you at the finish line and stealing your victory? Yes, Chocobo GP has that too, and it feels worse in many ways. Like these portals? Sometimes they misorient and shoot you right off course or into walls and you end up further back than you were. That’s an interesting idea! And there’s a degree to which it works, although it could use some fine-tuning. Character Super Attacks can also boost others. For example, color-coded red and blue portals warp you forward on the course while sometimes allowing others to follow you, and occasionally catching someone in front of you off guard and teleporting them the other direction. They often benefit both the players behind you and yourself if you use them. The move selection does its best to offer rubberbanding without the blue hull. (Bronze is just random, but hey, it’s something!) Gold is usually the best and gives you two of the same elements, but silver guarantees to match your final type and is sometimes a better choice. Instead of item boxes, there are bronze, silver, and gold color-coded pickups. The Magicite item system can be an interesting layer of management. ![]() And the game’s first “season” additions, Cloud and Squall, show they’re sticking to that timeline for a while longer. The cast includes Vivi and Steiner, alongside main characters like Moogles. ![]() His items are Magicite, with effects that increase as you collect more of the same type before shooting. And that PS1 era final fantasy influence is clear. A sequel to the original PlayStation release Chocobo racing, Chocobo GP builds on the basis of this game. But more often a game fails despite all efforts. It’s definitely doable! We’ve seen that over the years, with releases like Blur and Sonic & All-Stars Racing transformed Giving Nintendo a real run for its money. And easy? Mario Kart Games often feel simple and obvious, fun games certainly, but ones that get there through obvious means.īut if you play most of the franchise’s competitors, remind yourself how much skill and balance it takes to make a kart racer run. It is forgivable to forget that sometimes! Nintendo often makes it look easy.
